SSRC Check-in and Giveaway #3

This discussion post is for those who have read My Soul to Save - whether during the challenge or before.
We're just over a week into month two of the reading challenge. Not everyone who signed up posted a review during the first month, but that's okay! There are plenty of months left during the challenge to participate.

And some readers posted more than one review during the first month of the challenge which is AWESOME!

But it's time for another check in. There are quite a few readers who have already posted their reviews. I'm not one of them, but I definitely won't be waiting until the last minute to write my review like last month, although I still don't plan on posting it until the end of the challenge month.

This month's read is My Soul to Save. And things take a bit of a turn in this second book in the series. They get just a little bit darker.

But what I'd love to know is:

1. Are you a first reader or a re-reader of My Soul to Save?

2a. If you have read MSTSave before and you haven't yet re-read it: Do you remember what happens in this book? Do you anticipate feeling any different with the re-read? Do you think your loyalty toward the boy you chose for Kaylee in the first book will change in this book? Why?

(Please try to keep your answers spoiler-free and only give your opinions as they pertain to MSTSave.)

2b. If you have read MSTSave before and you have re-read it: Did you remember everything from your first read or did you discover something new? Did you like it more on the re-read or did you like it better the first time around? Why? Did your loyalty toward the boy you chose for Kaylee in the first book change in this book? Why?

(Please try to keep your answers spoiler-free and only give your opinions as they pertain to MSTSave.)

2c. If this is your first read of MSTSave and you haven't yet read it: Have you read the description or have you heard the chatter about this book? Going in, do you have any preconceived notions about what to expect? What are you most anticipating about this next book?

(Please try to keep your answers spoiler-free and only give your opinions as they pertain to MSTSave.)

2d. If this is your first read of MSTSave and you have read it: Was it everything you expected it to be? Were there any surprises? Do you want to keep reading? If so, just how tough will it be for you to wait? Has your loyalty toward the boy you chose for Kaylee in the first book changed? Why?

(Please try to keep your answers spoiler-free and only give your opinions as they pertain to MSTSave.)

3. Any other thoughts?

If you leave a comment with your answers to the above three questions and a way to get in touch - Twitter name, FB page, email or other - I will let Random choose one winner on Sunday night at 10 p.m. Pacific for:

One copy of any of Rachel Vincent's books that I can order from Amazon or The Book Depository. (This can include the two anthologies with the short stories that are in this month's mini-challenge, which will be held again in a couple months.)

Yes, it's international. Yes, you have to be at least 13. And yes, if you choose one of the adult reads you need to be at least 18.

I will contact the winner for their book selection by whichever method they leave me to contact them and announce them here in this post on Monday.

THE GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED. Good luck everyone. I'll be running the numbers through Random and announcing the winner on Monday!

Congratulations kelseykins! You are the winner of the Rachel Vincent book of your choice. I'll be notifying you by Twitter so that you can send me your details and book choice.

  1. I have to say >.<
this is my...can't remember what number rereading this book...and it was my least favorite up until Rachel gave some hints as to what an important book this was...after that post this is the second time I'll be reading it...with Rachel's words in my mind >.<
I remember quite a lot of this book and I don't think I'll be rooting for another one than Nash so far...
So many rereads and still...I think I fall in love with Nash even more in this one...though...Tod get's some of the spotlight too and I LOVED LOVED LOVED the fact that we get to know him even more not just him but Kaylee's dad too... I really really like Kaylee's dad character...call me weird...but I think he gives the book a really nice spice same as Harmony >.<
So I'm really excited to read this book and NO I have not started my reread yet...next week, PROMISE!! :D
But I know that still...my heart will be breaking...I KNOW T_T because of IID T_T I'll be thinking and thinking about that book while reading this one *-*

  2. 1. I'm a first time reader of My Soul to Save but have yet to start reading it.

2c. I have read the back blurb but I don't know anything else going into reading it. I'm trying to keep relatively spoiler free if I can. I don't think I have any preconceived notions going into this book. What i"m looking forward to is seeing what happens next with the characters and story.

    3. I really enjoyed the first book and am looking forward to reading this one soon!

  3. 1. Are you a first reader or a re-reader of My Soul to Save?

Rereading, but I haven't started yet.

2a. If you have read MSTSave before and you haven't yet re-read it: Do you remember what happens in this book? Do you anticipate feeling any different with the re-read? Do you think your loyalty toward the boy you chose for Kaylee in the first book will change in this book? Why?

I vaguely remember. I've already reread the back cover, and I remember the major details. I'm positive I'm going to love it just as much as last time, if not more :) As for the boy...I know that even though I like Nash+Kaylee in MSTT (and pretty much ONLY in MSTT), this is going to be the one where I flip over to Tod again :)

  4. I have read it before but I haven't re-read it yet. I do remember what happened in this book. And when I read it my loyalties did change about halfway through the book (I think). I was disappointed in Nash. But that isn't to say that I liked Tod in this book. You could say that I became impartial.

  5. This will be my second my time reading "My Soul to Save". The book is still fairly fresh in my mind, so I remember the plot pretty well. Though I'm sure there will be little bits and pieces I didn't notice the first time around. I know will get mad at a certain someone for using and not telling the truth about possible life-threatening dangers to a certain someone else. I don't want to name names. ;)

I'm not sure when I'll get around to reading it, but I'm hoping it will be fairly soon - especially since I was planning on reading the two short stories as well. We shall see... :)

Oh btw, I just had to "steal" your Team Tod button! :D

  7. I finished My Soul To Save on the fourteenth. Amazing. Loved it! And no, I'm still team Nash. ;) Although my opinion towards Tod has been swayed. He does have feelings, so I see why you like him. Also, HOLY ENDING. I *never* saw that coming. I can't wait to read MSTKeep.

  8. 1. I'm a re-reader of MStS.

2b. It's been a little over a year since I first read MStS and I can proudly say that I remembered most of the details, but I was happy at a chance to refresh my mind for the upcoming books in the challenge, so I would say that I liked it more the second time around.

My loyalty to the boy that I chose for Kaylee in the first book remains the same in this book because I could feel Nash's loyalty and protectiveness of Kaylee. He really cared for her and looked over her. He often disapproved of what Kaylee was doing in MStS, but he stood by her since he wouldn't let her face the dangers alone.

    3. Can't wait to re-read MStK!!

  9. Yes, I am a rereader of this book.

2b. If you have read MSTSave before and you have re-read it:

Did you remember everything from your first read or did you discover something new?
A: Hmmm... I discovered Tod! :D Made me see the book in a whole new way!

Did you like it more on the re-read or did you like it better the first time around? Why?
A: Definitely love the reread more! I dunno... I guess because I knew how it would end, but still wanted to see how it would happen.

Did your loyalty toward the boy you chose for Kaylee in the first book change in this book? Why?
A: No... sadly. I was still Team Nash here. Though I found a lot of cute Tod moments here! :D

  10. 1) I'm a first-time reader of My Soul to Save.

2d) Well, I expected to be good & yeah, it was :) I wasn't surprised by anything in it, but still loved it & I definitely want to continue the series, but it won't be as tough waiting to read My Soul to Keep as it was the waiting to read My Soul to Save, but because I actually plan to read MStK in April (a fellow blogger told me that I'll want to read My Soul to Steal right away after it, so I'm planning to read both & Reaper in April) so I guess the waiting will get tougher as the time goes by ;) As for the love interest, I'm still sticking to Nash, I like him a lot, but I have a feeling that might change in the next book :( Also, I still really like Tod as a character, he's such a interesting character, so I'm looking forward to finding out more about him in the following books, especially in his novella :)

    3. When I read MStS, I started thinking if maybe I should change my rating of MStT - I gave it 4.5 of 5, but I was thinking that maybe I should change it to 5. Still haven't decided, but it was definitely much better than MStS...

  11. 1. I'm a first time reader

2c. Ugh! I haven't started yet but I'm days away :) The only thing I know going in is the vague summary on the back of the book. I haven't heard any chatter and I've avoided any reviews of this one. I'm a clean slate!!!

The only thing I'm anticipating for this book is learning more about Kaylee's dad, seeing her and Nash's romance grow and seeing Tod twart the whole thing!!! I haven't picked a guy yet - I'm holding out b/c I'm not sure about Nash yet...

Can't wait to see how wrong I end up ;)

  12. I have read MSTSave already, and will be re-reading it soon.

I remember that this is the book where we are introduced to the popstar Addison and her problems, and where we are introduced to Kaylee's main adversary from this book onwards in the series.
Having read the rest of the series, I'm pretty sure I'll look at Tod in a different way. I've always liked him, but seeing how he can be, I think I'll find his need to help Addy in this book so much more sweeter than the first time round.
Without being too spoilery, my loyalty lies with the guy Kaylee is with at the end of If I Die. This is because, after reading MSTTake, I realised, for everyone involved, things are better that way. When there are no problems for them, both Nash and Tod are great guys, but when there are problems... I think Kaylee can be the wrong girl for one of these boys. So my loyalty won't change I don't think, even though I'm a fan, to a certain degree, of both boys. If anything, I think it will get stronger.

I hope that all makes sense and isn't too cryptic! I'm looking forward to revisiting the events at the end of this book, because I'm kind of fuzzy over why a certain Mr Nasty ends up so mad at and obsessed with Kaylee.

  13. 1. I'm a first time reader of this whole series.

2D. This book was even better than I thought it would be! I liked it better than the first.

    3. I'm falling in love with this series! I definitely can't wait to read the next book next month.

  14. 1. Are you a first reader or a re-reader of My Soul to Save?
I'm a re-reader of the book and the series :)

2a. If you have read MSTSave before and you haven't yet re-read it: Do you remember what happens in this book? Do you anticipate feeling any different with the re-read? Do you think your loyalty toward the boy you chose for Kaylee in the first book will change in this book? Why?

I remember some part like the plot line and Kaylee learning her bean sidhe hertiage. I'm almost done reading the book and I have to say I feel that Nash is more possessive and protective of Kaylee than he was in book one.

2b. If you have read MSTSave before and you have re-read it: Did you remember everything from your first read or did you discover something new? Did you like it more on the re-read or did you like it better the first time around? Why? Did your loyalty toward the boy you chose for Kaylee in the first book change in this book? Why?

I've learned a few thing here like the hellions contracts and clauses. I like it more during the re-read because I'm getting a lot of small details that I miss out the last time I read it. And My loyalites with Nash? Undecided

    3. Any other thoughts
The neitherworld isn’t what it seems as the gray world between Kaylee's world.

  15. 1. This is a first read for me. I had read My Soul to Take prior to this challenge, but from this book on, I'm exploring the Netherworld for the first time.

2d. I loved to get to know more about the Netherworld and how it works. It's something I expected after MStT and I'm glad I got to explore the Netherworld.

I didn't expect the story to go where it went, but I guess that was because I didn't expect Kaylee to be so selfless and do what she did for Addy and her sister. Also, the ending was quite unexpected to me. I think the same happened with MStT.

I'm still loyal to Nash, because he seems just the perfect, dreamy boyfriend, but I'm kinda expecting some trouble between him and Kaylee in MStK... something about their interactions in this book made me think that.

I soooooo wanna keep reading, and I'm kinda dying to get my hands on My Soul to Keep.

    3. Thank you for hosting this challenge! It's being so much fun. ;)

  16. I have already read it once. February has bee a slow reading month for don reason, hoping to get back into it soon.
I still remember a majority of what happened and don't really foresee a change in my mindset with the second read. But supposed to learn something new everytime right, so, guess we'll see.
I'm excited about finally getting past MStS and continue this series. Thanks Rachel for the incentive to get this one finished!

  17. 1. I'm a re-reader!

2b. I'm liking Tod a lot all over again-- on my first read of the book, I was giving it a general read, not focusing on one character in particular, but now that I'm going over it a second time I have the luxury of focus. I'm choosing to look at Tod because he's my favorite character and also one that I think could be really important to the series down the road. ;D I've always been a Kaylee/Tod shipper (even though I haven't read anything yet to support this) and so getting to see Tod wrapped up in another relationship while Kaylee is starting to notice how she admires him for his devotion is pretty cool. What I'm noticing more through this second read is how much Tod isn't trying to save Addy as he is trying to say good-bye to her in a way that respects the relationship that they had. I love that about him: it's a great, anguished side of his snarky character that we don't always see.

    3. This has been a lot of fun! I'm debating bugging my friend with a kindle to download Reaper for me so I can continue my Tod obsession and read it. xD

  18. 1. This was the first time I read MStSave, and I really liked it, though not quite as much as MStL.

2d. I enjoyed learning more about the Netherworld and seeing more of Tod, though at the end I was still on the Kaylee-and-Nash train. It was a really great read and I went straight on to MStK afterwards. Reaper...soon...

    3. I love how twitter shortens "Soul Screamers" to "Creamers" in the URL :P

  21. 1. First time reading
2d. Finished reading it. I did enjoy it but I didn't like it as much as the first book. I felt like this book focused more on the secondary characters than it did Nash, Kaylee, and Tod. After finishing this book I am still on Team Nash. Tod was a little annoying to me how he kept popping in on Kaylee and Nash.
    3. I definitely plan on continuing the series and I am excited to see where the series goes.

  22. 1. I am a re-reader of My Soul to Save
    2. A. I don’t remember everything that takes place in the book just the main points. I don’t anticipate feeling much different to the first time I read it. I don’t particularly have a preferred boy for Kaylee.
    3. I still find myself questioning why certain decision were made in the second half of the book, some of the choices Kaylee and co. make just seem to be trying and succeeding in doing things the hard way.

  24. This is my second read of MStS - but each book after this one will be a first read.

2b. I'd honestly forgotten how the book ended. I just remembered basic plot points. My Nash loyalty has not changed, but I felt his flaws began to be shown more in this book. And Tod's character development was superb in this one.

My review will be up on Wednesday!
