Rachel Vincent Appreciation Weekend

The Soul Screamers Reading Challenge is almost over. I can't believe it. I'm sitting here staring at If I Die and getting so super excited that ONE MONTH FROM TODAY Before I Wake will be in my hands, on my shelf, on my Kindle and in bookstores around the country.

But I digress.... I'm not creating this post to talk about my excitement for this next book in the Soul Screamers Series. I'm here to talk about one of my most favorite authors of all time. Why? Well, because she's awesome. That's right. She is.

This reading challenge would not have been the same without her monthly chats. Which she has offered up because... you guessed it... she's awesome.

And it would not be nearly as amazing without her offering to sign a ton of books for the giveaways. Or to offer up two amazing prizes that are ONE-OF-A-KIND.

But she's not awesome only because of how she has so generously helped out this challenge. She was awesome loooooong before and will continue to be so looooong after.

So. What do I think I know about this author? What do I think makes her awesome? Lots of things. Many of which I'll be kicking myself about because I forgot to mention them here. But here goes....

She is a passionate writer.

Whether you're as huge fan of her stories as I am, the fact is that it's evident in the stories she writes just how passionate she is about writing them. Not one of the stories I've read felt like she phoned it in. Not even in the slightest. Every angst-filled moment you can tell was thought through, fought for and delivered with love, care, concern and maybe just a little wicked enjoyment.

She cares for her characters.

Yep. Even the ones she makes bad things happen to. Even the ones she kills. Each of them have a story. They're not "insert extra here" characters. They all have depth. They all have a reason. They all play a role. Even if it's an evil one or one you just can't stand.

She is a dedicated and hard worker.

While it may be hard to believe, I'll just bet she has a life outside of writing. She talks often of a #1 who must take up even a fraction of her time. She speaks of having a passion for baking - and does a show and tell with those gingerbread creations that are totally amazing. And yet she constantly seems to be working.

She makes those word counts. She meets those deadlines. She doesn't let down her publisher or her fans. She fights and struggles and imagines and creates and manages to get it all down in a way that is exciting and intriguing. And does that sound easy? Does that sound like it takes no time?

But she also manages to blog. And post updates to facebook. And tease bits and pieces from her stories. And markets herself. And shares her time with fans. And travels to events, signings, conventions. And if that weren't enough...

She knows her craft.

I am not an author. I don't work in the business. But I attended one panel she spoke on and the things she said made so much sense. And some of those other, newer, writers who were there definitely took note of the things she said, the wisdom she imparted.

And the fact that she is currently writing two amazing series with very different characters and worlds and manages to keep everything straight is a testament to not only how hard a worker she is but how skilled she is at what she does.

Writing is creative. I'm sure there are parts to it that are a ton of fun. But it's also a business. And yet she manages to create stories that don't feel like she's only looking to line her purse with cash. Her stories feel like labors of love. They feel like they're written just for the readers and not to meet a marketing target. And they tease, entice and excite. They go in directions that aren't always popular and they delve into very dark and real issues that aren't always everyone's cup of tea. But she goes there and she does it anyway.

She is an amazing person.

While I've only  met her briefly and only "know" her online, she constantly goes above and beyond and gives so much to her fans. More than we could ever ask for. More than she has to in order to keep an online presence.

She doesn't have to do all that she does to keep a fan-base and yet she does. She has a publisher with a marketing team who help to promote her books. She doesn't have to share aspects of her personal life with us, and yet she does. And even though she will still always be a rock star to her fans, she allows us to see that she is, in fact, a very real person.

What do you think?

I could go on. And on. And on. And yet I won't. Because this isn't the me show today. It's about this amazing author. And so, I'd love it if you would - whether you're participating in the Soul Screamers Reading Challenge or not - SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS about the author in the comments this weekend.

Is there something in it for you? Maybe. There might be something amazing for one or more of you. But I won't say. I'd rather you leave a comment just because you think the author deserves to be appreciated, as I do, and not because you could potentially win some prize.

And I would love it if you SPREAD THE WORD. Not because I care about blog traffic - this blog goes away after the challenge. Not because I am working in cahoots with the author - she has NO IDEA. But because every so often an author who gives so much deserves some recognition just because.

And just in case you haven't seen, heard, met, read or know about Author Rachel Vincent, here's just a little bit about her....

And just some of the places you can find her: Twitter, Facebook, Blog

  1. I hadn't read any of her books until I did this challenge and I must say I'm so happy I did. I have really enjoyed her books and have become invested in her characters. I can't wait to see what happens next in the series in Before I Wake. I completely agree that she is an amazing writer and deserves to be praised!!

  2. Hey, where are all the lovely comments??? I was going to write a review, but thought I'd check back here to see what nice comments peeps had left. When I saw there weren't any yet, I had to stop everything and write this instead. :D

From all the books I have read in the last year and a half, I can honestly say that Rachel Vincent's Soul Screamers series lands in my top 2 favorites ever - actually, make it number 1. ;) I can only agree with everything Rachel/fiktshun has already said in this post. Rachel V. is simply awesome!!! She is so passionate about everything she does. I am astonished at her writing pace - 5,000 words a DAY! That's unbelievable!!! You can tell she really treasures her readers. She always answers questions, she takes time out of her busy schedule to chat with us.
I actually felt so bad at the last spoiler chat. I was super excited about it but when it was time I had stuff going on around me and couldn't concentrate on the chat the way I would have liked. I still got to ask a few questions, but I wish I would have been able to be more active. :/
One thing I absolutely LOVE are her - sometimes "mean" - teasers. I actually find it more of tease when she says things along the lines of "Oh, I wish I could give you this teaser but I can't because then you'll know who won't survive BIW." I'll be sitting at home, not wondering what the teaser might be, but shouting "Who, who, WHO??? I need to know NOW!!!" LOL

So, yes, I absolutely adore and admire Rachel and her work. I could kick myself for not having read any of her other series yet. The worst part is, I have at least a few of the books sitting on my shelf. When the SSRC is over, I'll definitely start "Blood Bound". I've been wanting to read it for months and months, but somehow never did. The thing is, I already know I'm going to love it, so I'm going to say July will be my month for "Blood Bound" - early July. ;)

Anyway, I'm starting to ramble here. *lol*

I love Rachel, I love her books, her characters, the worlds she has created. I wish I had just a 10th of her imagination, seriously. Her Soul Screamers series is so unique and unlike anything I've ever read. It's amazing!!!
Her writing is so beautiful, she paints incredible pictures - you can see every little detail right in front of your eyes. It's like you're IN her book, her story, her world. It's like your living through everything her characters are going through. It is unbelievable!!!

OK, this might have turned out a little bit too long now... whoopsi... erm... sorry... *lol*

  3. My love of authors is exactly why I got into blogging. Just like Ashley, I hadn't read Rachel yet but she was sitting on my TBR with other authors I hadn't gotten around to. So when your challenge went up, I jumped aboard, thinking this would be just like every other challenge. You read, you discuss, there's some nice goodies... But I remember when you first started posting about the challenge and you announced that Rachel (the other one, not you :)) would be contributing some prizes. And then she "advertised" the challenge. And THEN she started doing the chats!!! OMG! What an amazing author to be so gracious to her fans!

In these days when a few authors often time snub us bloggers and some give off the vibe they're too good for their fans, Rachel Vincent has truly impressed me with her dedication to her fans.

Oh, and she's a fabulous writer, to boot!! And I must say, doing online chats has got to be hard!! You guys both have the patience of saints to wrangle everyone in to stay on topic, etc.!!! I couldn't do it!

Thank you, both Rachels, for the great challenge!!!

  4. I wholeheartedly agree with *everything* in this post. At this point, I've read every book available by Rachel Vincent - and I can't wait to read them all again!(Disclaimer: There are still novellas and short stories I have yet to read)

From the moment I met Faythe, I was completely hooked on Rachel Vincent.

She is AWESOME. And honestly, since this challenge started and I've seen how Rachel interacts with her fans, I've become an even bigger fan.

    Both Rachels are pretty awesome.

  5. I haven't read ANY of her books...I know the horror right? But thanks to you, now I want to read every single book she writes. I don't think there is a better supporter and advocate than you. This is a very sweet post :)

I totally agree, she is amazing with her fans and readers and is very dedicated.

I knew about your challenge but didn't know about this blog until today!! When I RT your tweet. :( Oh well, it's never too late I think ;)

  6. Oh also, I can't believe how fast she writes!! From what I read on twitter, she always meets her own deadlines, no matter what. That is pure dedication, I truly admire that about her.

  7. Rachel is quite simply awesome. I love Soul Screamers and have been able to get a couple of others addicted to the series, too.

The thing I admire most about Rachel is how much she gives to others. To give some of your profits to charity because you can't offer up a novella as a freebie isn't something many authors will do, but she did it. I have to admire that.

Her characters feel so realistic, no matter that they have special abilities, and it's an incredible gift to be able to write them in that manner. I may not like them all, but they are always fully fleshed out and have a purpose. There is never filler; everything counts.

Yes, Rachel is truly incredible and I'm so glad I discovered her books.

  8. I wouldn't met Rachel Vincent if not because of you Rachel (Fiktshun) and I am so glad I did. When I start exploring the world of YA books only few books and authors really capture my interest and fewer can really stick me into reading a series. Rachel Vincent is one of those few.

Usually, I easily get bored reading series because of the tendency of it to get dragging and uninteresting but with the Soul Screamer series I didn't get those issues. Every installment is interesting on its own. Having me continue to read the series is already an accomplishment since I am usually a maximum of three books per series. More than that will take me a lot of convincing to continue! But in Soul Screamers I don't need anyone to convince me to stick around as I eagerly waiting for each installment. And just thinking it will end eventually makes me sad !

  9. Rachel, you are such an awesome advocate for Rachel V. I started reading the Soul Screamers around Christmas. I saw the cover and thought it looked interesting. Her story and characters completely captured my attention. The empathy I have for her characters is so much more than I do for other books. Rachel V is incredibly sweet, and takes time out to respond to her readership even when she has a goal to meet. I admire her determination to make the best books possible for her fans. I can't wait to see the other worlds she creates for us.

  10. Totally agree-- Rachel Vincet is amazing!! ThE SSRC was my first into to her writing, and I'm forever greatful!! I have found a new favorite author and series!! Each book has left me wanting more-- this wait for BIW is just about enough to make a person go crazy!! I totally get absorbed into the SS world as soon as I start reading a book.

Rachel V was also the first author who not only acknowledged me on twitter, but responded to my comments about her books. It is nice to know that she appreciates her readers by taking the time to interact with us!!

  11. I read the first book in the Soul Screamers last year, and I was amazed at the imagination and the fantastic writing by Rachel Vincent. Since then I've been following her blog and FB, and what a dedicated writer she is! Always available to her fans, always patient and teasing us with something from her next book. I believe she has a unique relationship with her fans. And she still works so hard on her books!

Luckily, this challenge came along, and I got to read the books almost back to back, and what a great experience this has been! I laugh, I cry, I shiver and I suffer with the characters, and worse, I finish each book begging for more. This amazing writer gets me involved in her books like no one but a few can. Thank you for your books, Rachel!

  12. I wish I had something as awesome to say as all of that...well thought and seriously amazing.
But I'm really bad at this, when it comes to authors that I look up to in such a high level that I rethink about 10000 times before even commenting on their sites.

I do love her for the books of hers that I have read.
She completely blew my mind away plus she corrected me on the banshee-bean sidhe thingy :D though now I can't remember if that's exactly how you write it.

But...besides giving back to us. Taking her precious writing time to tease us without mercy, to show us and apologize for not posting-though it's NOT her responsibility nor an obligation of hers- besides writing and writing and making me fall deeper and deeper in love with the dark creatures that Reapers are...

Once upon a time, there was a really shy girl that decided to post a MSTSteal kind-of-review... She didn't blog at the time so she decided to post it on her facebook page... later on she saw that a lot of traffic had been going on just after she posted said review...
Hours passed and then... she died :D lol Rachel had shared and said the review she had read was completely amusing and somewhat funny and she shared the link... Sadly she didn't know she had just signed a contract to have a salvadorian stalker for life...

Seriously though, I love her passion for writing, how serious she is when needs be and how funny she can be too...
I fought sooo hard for the local bookstore to finally bring her books, and I'm proud to say I managed it!! Rachel V now has a pretty part of a shelf in the mall with her SS books! >.<

I don't think that I'm saying enough... she just... makes me want to read nonstop. HER books are one of the few that when I feel like giving up...or stop reading...or thinking that this or that
HELP me and make me go back on track :D Make me want to continue me that in NO way are my problems as hard as Kaylee's >.< ~because...I'm just THAT kind of girl that even in fantasy books manages to grab a bit of reality and compare it to her own~

I LOVE Rachel V. and I'm 100% sure that I will cry if I ever meet her... But first I think I should get over my complete and utter starstruck intimidated persona whenever I have to comment or simply reply to something she said...
    Believe me... it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hard!!!

But there you go... she makes me smile endlessly plus!! If I ever were to bake I now know where I can find tips and stuff... plus her #1 rocks!! I mean... he DID design that one Tod button right??? with Apricot all over it >.<

    Rachel Vincent...
Thank you for writing the SS-I'll try my best to read your other books!! REALLY-
Thank you for sharing with us.
Thank you for torturing me with your BIW teasers.
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!
For always reminding me why I love books best... because behind them...there's an amazing person who loves what she does and always deliver :D

    #1 silent stalker :D

  13. J

Wow... And I thought I was a pretty big fan of Rachel Vincent- but I gotta say, I think its you who's her biggest fan! You should seriously consider being her publicity manager or something- looks like you're doing a better job than her current one! :P (OK, I'm kidding. Slightly. ;) )

And I'm thinking there should be an author tourney, and you could defend Rachel! :)  I mean, you've practically already got the post written out!

But all kidding aside, this really is a great post. Your admiration for her really shows! It'd really be great if all authors had fans as dedicated as you. :) I mean, you hosted the SSRC, and was able to make tons of new people read her books, and what more can an author ask for, right? And Rachel Vincent  really does deserve it! She's written a lot of books, and they just keep getting better- I love the fact that she's about quality and not just quantity too! :) Her books? Well, they've all been freaking huge win so far. :D

I gotta say, Rachel Vicent... Rachel Clarke... And, wait for it... this post... is AWESOME! (Sorry, I couldn't resist! ;) )

  14. Great post Rachel, Im not good at expressing myself but you and Alba pretty much summed her up. I absolutely adore Rachels Shifter series. Its one of my all time favorite series and if I could get it in hardback I would. Ive read it so many times my poor PB copies are falling apart. From what I see on her blog and facebook she is such an amazing person too. She constantly gives back to her fans and she muc=st be super woman with the amount of books she can put out every year. I would love any of her books to be made into a movie, could you imagine Faythe Sanders on the big screen. Talk about a kick ass heroine!!! I dont know what else to say only yes she deserves all the admiration and thanks we can give her.

  15. Rachel Vincent is AWESOME! I mean ALMOST every book I've read so far from her has been amazing and one time when I tweeted the fact that I respect Kaylee Rachel replied instantly :)
NOT many authors reply back and she was awesome enough too! ALSO she's EVIL!!! Just look at the teasers she posts(especially one's with Tod for #BIW)

  16. Wow, I'm glad to see all the people who started reading Rachel's work because of your challenge! I am always recommending her books to anyone who will listen and I 100% agree with all of your points on her awesomeness. Some books are worth the praise, but sometimes an author comes along and shines just as bright as their fabulous stories.

  17. OMG, you guys are so amazing! I don't even know what to say! I've been out of town all weekend, taking a serious break from the internet, and I come back to find this, and you guys, and I remember exactly why I started blogging and Tweeting in the first place--because 99% of the readers I've ever met, both in person and online, are wonderful, enthusiastic, generous people who love to read and talk books. My kind of people. I'm so blessed to have you all, and I hope I never let you down.

Thanks so much to Rachel C (Fiktshun) and to all of the rest of you. I will never forget this. And with that, I am now newly inspired to go make WITH ALL MY SOUL the best Soul Screamers book yet. ;)

    Thank you so much!!!

  18. I dont remember when I first read one of Rachels books. I think it was Stray. I read all of her books and am a huge fan. I could only borrow them from the library because they dont have her books in bookstores in Croatia. I love all of her characters, the world she created and best of all, I love her writing. It is magical, the grace and fluidity with which she writes. I always count the days til her next book comes out. Thank you Rachel, for giving me and all your fans out there this amazing gift. I hope you never run out of ideas.

  19. I can't remember when did I decide to read ALL of Rachel's books. And I mean ALL of them.
So far I've read the whole SS series - and yes, you can picture me on my knees, looking at the clock in my wall waiting for the hours to pass and then the days so I can get my hands on BIW- and I plan to read her Shifters series next, actually I already have all the books, waiting for me... And I can't resist any longer.

But before I surrender I have to say this: Rachel Vincent, you seriously rock! Thank you for all your tweets, for all the teasers (I love them and I hate them at the same time xD), for all your support to this challenge... and specially for sharing with us all the stories your imagination can create.
You sure have a huge spot in my heart as one of my favorite authors :]

  20. I would LOVE to leave a comment about the awesomeness that is Rachel Vincent but unfortunatley I haven't yet read any of her books. I must thank you though because after all your beautiful comments and reasons of why you love Rachel and her books I guarantee I'll be checking out her books very, very soon! The dilemma? Which should I splurge on first?!

Off to Goodreads it up and decide which book I'll be purchasing first up by this author I've heard tons of good things about.

    Thanks again! :)

  21. Rachel Vincent is amazing!!!! I love all of her novels and I'm so glad I was introduced to her writing because of the Summer Crush tournament at YA-Sisterhood. I have always loved her books because the characters are flawed and they grow throughout the story. None of them are the "damsel in distress" type and I love that! The way she develops the characters as well as the world they live in amazes me. I'm currently reading Shadow Bound and I'm loving it! I have read every single one of her books that are out so far and each one always evokes some emotion out of me. I cried while reading the Shifters series, especially in Prey T_T and every now and then I have felt like slapping Nash or shaking some sense into him while reading Soul Screamers. She always breaks my heart (in the good way) and I'm preparing myself now for a heart break that will come in BIW. I don't know who she's going to have killed but I know that I'm going to need a box of tissues by my side as I'm reading it because it is going to tear me apart!!

  22. OMG! OMG Rachel! I love this post! I just can't get over how awesome this is, because Ms. Vincent deserves it so much. You're absolutely right. She doesn't have to interact with her readers as much as she does. She doesn't have to be on twitter or on her blog keeping us updated on how everything is going. Yet she does. And she doesn't do it, because she thinks she has to, but I think she actually enjoys doing it. Because it never feels fake.

I didn't even realize until now how much I enjoy reading Ms. Vincent's blog until just now. At least, I think she might know judging by the novel-length comments I leave on her posts most of the time. I love the little questions she asks, that just make me want to comment.

I also love the little contests she holds, like the one with the songs for IF I Die. It was like she read my mind with that one because I've had songs for that book in my head for this series for the longest time and I never have songs in my head for books.

And that event she did last year? With the character interviews and the questions from the fans and a day in the life of Tod? All that was beyond epic! She even answered one of my questions! She didn't have to do any of that. She really didn't. But she did. And I'm sure this is only the tip of the iceberg.

So yes, she's awesome and she more than deserves a post and comments dedicated to her because of this. If there was a Hall of Fame for Authors and we could vote on it, I'd definitely vote to put her in it. :)

  23. Oh my Gosh! I missed all the fun!
I'm not so good with this stuff of say the right thing and how much this author means to me.
Rachel Vincent is more than amazing, she's kind and friendly ans she always thinks about her fans and answers all our question even though she doesn't have to do it sometimes.
I started to read Soul Screamers cuz one of my best friends really loves these amazing books. And I was so surprised and happy to realize the SS world is stunning, creppy and fantastic!!!
Plus, I love all the characters! This series has make me feel.. FINALLY books that make me feel, I was jealous, angry, happy, sad... I wanted to kick some ass! Wow!!!!
I can't believe this fantastic author give us some of her pretty time!
    We love you Rachel!! <3

  24. While I told everyone that there wouldn't be any reward for leaving a comment - because kindness is its own reward - I may have a couple rewards to share.

ONE is five entries into the Before I Wake signed giveaway I'll be posting today. So, even those who are not in the SSRC but wanted to share their love for the author just because, will have a chance to win this book. But they will have already had to read If I Die.

ONE is a giveaway just for you. I'll be running all your names through Random for a signed copy of SHADOW BOUND. If you aren't 18 or you don't wish to accept the prize, I will choose the next name on the list Random creates. I'll be doing that later this week.

Feel free to continue to share your love for the author, but any comments below this one will not be eligible for the extra five entries or the Shadow Bound giveaway.

  25. Oh and sorry Rachel Vincent, but you won't be eligible for either giveaway. ;)

  26. Rachel VIncent is truly an amazing author, I can't wait to see what more she has to offer

  27. Awww man! I thought I had already left a comment on this one...guess not :(

  28. I'm super late but I wanted to thank Rachel Vincent as well for the chats. I've sadly missed a few but really loved the ones I was able to attend. I also really love and appreciate her facebook and twitter interactions even when she is torturing me with lots of juicy teasers. I LOVE her books so much. I will always be indebted to her for introducing me to TOD :-D I remember when If I Die came out I was glued to my couch and goodreads, literally typing up OMG updates every hour while reading. It was so damn good! It is one of those series that has stuck with me and that I think about often. Many nights I lie in bed dreaming of Tod lol so thanks again Rachel!
P.S. I still think selling my soul to Avari would be worth advanced copies of your books ;-)
